What is lost-wax casting?

The goldsmithing technique that transforms wax into metal

 

       

Lost-wax casting is one of the oldest techniques used to transform a wax model into a definitive metal object. In the world of jewelry, it allows for the creation of pieces with complex shapes, textured surfaces, and details that are difficult to achieve through other production processes.

Once cooled, the metal is removed from the investment and subjected to subsequent cutting, finishing, and polishing.

The investment is progressively heated.

The wax melts and is eliminated, leaving a cavity inside the mold in the exact shape of the original model.

This is the moment that gives the technique its name: the wax is lost, but its shape remains.

 

6. Metal casting

 

At this point, the metal is brought to a liquid state and introduced into the cavity left by the wax.

The metal fills the space previously occupied by the model, transforming a temporary material form into an object destined to last.

This is one of the most delicate phases of the entire process.

Temperature, metal fluidity, feeding, and model design must be correctly managed to achieve a successful casting.

7. Investment removal

Once the metal has cooled, the investment is removed.

The result of the casting then appears: the jewelry, still connected to the feeding channels and not yet finished.

This phase is particularly fascinating because it allows one to see the transition from wax to metal for the first time.

8. Cutting and finishing

The piece is separated from the casting tree.

The residues from the channels are then removed, and the surfaces are worked.

The jewelry can be filed, sanded, polished, or subjected to other processes, depending on the desired final effect.

It is here that the piece gradually takes on its definitive appearance.

 

9. Finishing

 

The final phase includes all the processes necessary to achieve the desired surface.

A polished finish can highlight the metal's brilliance, while a satin or more textured surface can better preserve the sculptural character of the work.

Why use lost-wax casting to create jewelry?

Lost wax offers great freedom in designing shapes.

It allows for working volumes, cavities, textures, and geometries that can be difficult to achieve through purely mechanical processes.

The difference lies mainly in how the process is used.

In industrial production, the goal may be to obtain numerous specimens that are as identical as possible.

In artisan craftsmanship, however, the model, finishes, and manual interventions can play a central role.

For this reason, it is important not to stop at the technique used, but to consider how the jewelry is actually made.
